XPO has added 46 doors to its service center in Norcross, Georgia, creating a 152-door facility and substantially expanding capacity in metro Atlanta, the LTL provider said this week.
"As part of our strategic plan, we're adding new doors in markets that can use more capacity and sustain growth over time," XPO Chief Operating Officer Dave Bates said in a July 13 news release.
The company plans to hire additional dockworkers and driver sales representatives, adding to the center's 120-person workforce.
“The decision to expand our service center in Norcross was driven by increased demand from our customers in the region,” spokesperson Jaycie Cooper said in a July 17 email. “The expansion will enable us to take additional freight with flexibility and greater ease, enhancing the quality of service we’re already providing.”
In 2021, XPO embarked on a strategic plan to add 900 new doors in its North American network by the end of 2023. Cooper said the company is on track to achieve that timeline by early 2024, and has already added roughly half since announcing the plan.
Most of the growth this year is due to expansions of existing terminals, CEO Mario Harik said on an earnings call in May. XPO is targeting these expansion areas to help improve network density and fluidity over the long-term.
"When industry volumes rebound, we'll capitalize on these high-return investments," he told investors.
Another recent expansion added 58 doors at a Salt Lake City terminal, according to a June 22 news release. The amount of freight handled there helped spur the change, Harik said.
He said the LTL provider is focused on adding capacity in markets where there is strong customer demand and where having additional space could provide long-term tailwinds.
