Wabash is recalling 3,448 trailers because an estimated nine out of every 10 failed to meet a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, according to a recall report last month.
The recall involves certain Wabash dry van trailers with model years 2009 through 2024 under the following models: DVDBHPC, DVCVHPC, DVHDHPC, DVLSHPC, DVCVRCP, DVXDHPC, RFALHSA, RFCVHSC, DVLHHSA, DVCVHSA and DVDBHSA.
The deficiency is because the equipment has a rail-style lift gate with a rear guard that’s too far forward, reducing impact protection and increasing injury risks, according to a Sept. 26 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration letter.
“The addition of a rail style lift gate was not taken into account when calculating the rear most extremity of the vehicle,” the recall report said.
To comply with FMVSS no. 224, “Rear Impact Protection,” the “remedied rear impact guard will include an extension to the horizontal member to bring the guard into compliance with the 305mm maximum setback,” the recall report said.
Dealers will add the extension free of charge, and owners are expected to be notified by mail in late November.
