Volvo is recalling certain 2022–2023 VNL trucks after air tanks were found to drag on the roadway, raising concerns over crash risks with other vehicles, according to a recall report.
Air tank fasteners in the recalled trucks were excessively tightened and could be broken, resulting in road hazards, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration letter from last week.
A safety recall report said 412 vehicles were potentially affected after those trucks “went to a 2nd stage manufacturer for installation of an APU (auxiliary power unit) which necessitated movement of the air tank mounting brackets.”
Volvo Trucks North America is recalling the potentially affected U.S. vehicles. No crashes have been reported because of the issue, Volvo said in a letter.
Dealers will replace the fasteners free of charge, and owner notification letters could be sent Dec. 21, according to the NHTSA.
This isn’t the first time that new Volvo Trucks North America vehicles have undergone recalls. 2021 VNL trucks have had seven recalls and 2022 models have had four other recalls so far in addition to the present one, according to an NHTSA database. Tightening or installation issues for those models have included issues such as improperly tightened flywheel capscrews and king pins, according to recall notices.
