Over a dozen Kenworth and Peterbilt model year 2025 trucks may need repairs to avoid a complete loss of control, prompting a recall of up to 3,887 potentially affected units.
An improperly heat-treated ball stud in a tie rod or drag link could break, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration letter dated June 17.
The trucks involve Kenworth K270, K370, T280, T380, T480, T680, T880, W900 and W990 models and Peterbilt 220, 536, 537, 548, 567, 579 and 589 models for the Paccar brands.
A supplier notified Paccar about the issue in late May, and there have been zero reported deaths or injuries, according to a recall report.
But owners are advised to not drive the vehicles until they’re fixed, given the possibility of a “complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said.
Dealers will inspect and replace tie rod and drag link assemblies free of charge, according to NHTSA.
Other recalls have also affected many of the same 2025 model year trucks, including an issue over a steering gear sector shaft and a steering gear assembly problem.
