Pitt Ohio is expanding its network with a new truck terminal in Norfolk, Virginia, according to a May 20 press release.
The 15,000-square-foot, 37-door facility will offer the company “unparalleled advantages,” allowing it to integrate maritime, inland transport and warehousing for importers and exporters, the release said.
Located near the Port of Norfolk and Pitt Ohio’s Richmond LTL terminal, the new site represents a major milestone for the company, said Chuck Hammel, VP of supply chain, in the release. The new terminal also gives Pitt Ohio access to direct, on-dock rail transportation via Norfolk Southern as well as intermodal options with CSX.
The facility is also in close proximity to Interstate 64 and two on-terminal transfer zones, according to the Port of Norfolk's website.
“This synergy significantly reduces transit times and enhances overall supply chain efficiency, yielding substantial cost savings for our customers annually,” Hammel said in the release.
In addition to its anticipated logistic efficiencies, Pitt Ohio aims for the new terminal to be a leader in sustainability with energy efficient heating, air and lighting. The recently opened site also has waste and recycling programs as well as water resource management, per the company’s website.
Pitt Ohio now has five international maritime terminals: They’re located in Chesapeake, Virginia; Center Valley, Pennsylvania; Glen Burnie, Maryland; Hamilton, New Jersey; and Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. The company also has 25 LTL terminals, several of which it has been relocating in recent years, including one move from Toledo, Ohio, to Monroe, Michigan, in September.
