Load-to-truck ratios can help trucking industry stakeholders assess changes in demand.
DAT Freight & Analytics reports these ratios for dry van, reefer and flatbed, where increases indicate more loads than trucks available to haul them. The ratios are calculated weekly by dividing the number of loads by the number of truck posts over a seven-day period.
Brokers and carriers use the market information in their decision-making, as even incremental changes in the ratio can signal demand shifts. At its peak during the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, the metric showed there were 117 flatbed loads available for every truck.
The below chart captures historical trends from January 2018 through the present. Check out our weekly highlights below, which show how each mode behaved in the previous week, giving stakeholders insights into market opportunities.
