FreightWorks ceased operations last week leading to the loss of 200 jobs.
Butch Maltby, communications director for FreightWorks, told Transport Dive the decision to shutter the North Carolina-based truckload carrier came after the sudden loss of a majority of its business. Refrigerated trucking made up much of the carrier’s business.
Maltby said the company spent the past few days helping employees find new jobs. Available drivers have drawn attention from neighboring trucking companies.
“We’ve been getting calls and it’s really important for people to know we’re just not throwing people to the wind,” Maltby said. “We’re trying to help people identify the right places to go.”
The company no longer is transporting goods but likely will remain open another two weeks to wind down operations. FreightWorks delivered loads through Friday, and recently took delivery of several new Peterbilt trucks, which must be returned.
The company was launched in April 2012 with the purchase of its first truck and grew rapidly over the next decade. As of 2021, the company had announced plans to build a new terminal and headquarters in Rutherfordton, North Carolina.
