Averitt Express is testing an electric yard switcher at its Nashville service center, the company shared on LinkedIn.
The Terminal Investment Corp. (TICO) Pro-Spotter Electric vehicle represents “a significant step toward more sustainable logistics practices,” the LTL carrier said in its post.
“While we're still in the testing phase, this initiative is a crucial part of our broader strategy to evaluate and integrate cleaner technologies into our operations,” Averitt Express posted. “Our goal is to identify solutions that not only benefit the environment but also contribute to the efficiency and sustainability of our customers' supply chains.”
The Cookeville, Tennessee-based carrier said the EV yard switcher was among several strategies it has been exploring to reduce emissions across its operations.
The Pro-Spotter Electric, which uses a Volvo Penta driveline solution, entered full production last year. Penske Logistics is among TICO’s other customers incorporating the vehicle into their operations.
Another customer, NFI, is looking to decarbonize the transport industry, and drivers appreciate the quiet experience with a lot less vibration and not smelling like diesel, representatives said in a promotional video. “TICO has quickly become our No. 1 provider in that yard horse space because of their reliability and their service," NFI former SVP of Fleet Services Bill Bliem said.
While the trucking industry has been cautious about adopting EV trucks, often citing cost and range concerns, carriers have increasingly shifted aspects of terminal operations to electric, from forklifts to yard trucks like TICO’s.
“Proud to be partnered with you on this venture Averitt Express!” TICO commented.
