I was in Oakland talking to owner-operator protesters for much of last week. And one thing struck me from our conversations: Many talked not just about AB5, but also about upcoming state emissions rules that they said would run them out of business.
Many owner-operators bought their trucks years ago, and new emissions standards in California will require them to replace vehicles at a time when supply is low and prices are high. Protesters also told me their margins are thinner this year due to rising fuel and insurance costs. Others told me that they were considering moving out of the state altogether given the combination of upcoming state regulations.
The effect of AB5 on owner-operators is a story about how regulation can have unintended consequences for small business owners. More to come on that.
In the meantime, we've rounded up last week's AB5 coverage, in case you missed an update.
